Year 3 of the five-year IR(ME)R update — keeping dose as low as reasonably achievable, using the right equipment settings, and how IRR17 local rules sit beside IR(ME)R.
Course aim
Keep dentists and entitled operators current with IR(ME)R duties so every exposure is justified, optimised and recorded — and so the practice can show a 5-year radiation-protection update.
5 hours over 5 years: this is Year 3 of 5. Each module is 1 hour of verifiable CPD. Completing all five meets the PrismCPD IR(ME)R update of 5 hours for dentists. Complete the modules in numerical order: Year 1, then Year 2, then Year 3, then Year 4, then Year 5.
What you will be able to do
- 1Apply ALARA so diagnostic quality is achieved at the lowest reasonably achievable dose
- 2Use rectangular collimation, holders and appropriate exposure factors
- 3Describe diagnostic reference levels and why they are not dose limits for patients
- 4Outline IRR17 local rules, controlled areas and the Radiation Protection Supervisor role

Suitable for: Dentists, dental hygienists and therapists, orthodontic therapists, and dental nurses who are entitled to act as IR(ME)R operators.
