Year 4 of the five-year IR(ME)R update — pregnancy, children, CBCT, and how to explain benefit and risk so patients can agree to an exposure.
Course aim
Keep dentists and entitled operators current with IR(ME)R duties so every exposure is justified, optimised and recorded — and so the practice can show a 5-year radiation-protection update.
5 hours over 5 years: this is Year 4 of 5. Each module is 1 hour of verifiable CPD. Completing all five meets the PrismCPD IR(ME)R update of 5 hours for dentists. Complete the modules in numerical order: Year 1, then Year 2, then Year 3, then Year 4, then Year 5.
What you will be able to do
- 1Apply extra care when justifying exposures for children
- 2Manage pregnancy enquiries without delaying a justified dental radiograph
- 3Recognise that CBCT is a higher-dose examination needing specific entitlement
- 4Explain benefit and risk in plain language before exposing (GDC outcome A)
The five-year IR(ME)R series

- Year 2 — Justification and selection criteria

Suitable for: Dentists, dental hygienists and therapists, orthodontic therapists, and dental nurses who are entitled to act as IR(ME)R operators.
Always follow current IR(ME)R 2017, IRR17, UKHSA/CQC guidance and your employer’s procedures. This course is knowledge CPD, not a substitute for local entitlement or equipment training.
