3. IRR17: local rules, areas and the RPS

Local rules

IRR17 requires local rules for the controlled area (typically the room during exposure). They tell staff where to stand, when the door is closed, who may initiate an exposure, and what to do if something goes wrong. They must match the room. A poster from a different layout is a finding.

Controlled area

During exposure, nobody should be in the primary beam. Operators stand in the designated position (often outside the room or behind a barrier) as the risk assessment states. Do not stand in the doorway “just for this one”.

Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS)

The employer appoints an RPS to supervise work in accordance with local rules. The RPS is not a substitute for the Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA), who provides specialist advice. Dentists should know who both people are in their practice.

Staff dose

Most dental staff do not need personal dosimeters if the risk assessment says doses are trivial — but that decision is the employer’s with RPA advice, not a receptionist’s. Pregnant staff must be able to declare pregnancy and have the risk assessment reviewed.
