Module 1 of 3 — why legal and ethical CPD is highly recommended, how GDC Standards apply every day, and how to take valid consent from adults and from people who may lack capacity.
Course aim
Give every team member a working grasp of UK legal and ethical duties in dental practice — consent, confidentiality, candour and complaints — so patients are treated fairly and the practice can show a professional system.
3 hours in three modules: this is 1 of 3. Each module is 1 hour of verifiable CPD. Completing all three covers the PrismCPD legal and ethical series, including complaints handling. Complete them in numerical order: 1, then 2, then 3. All three stay open — there is no lock between modules.
What you will be able to do
- 1Explain why legal and ethical issues are GDC highly recommended CPD and how the three modules fit together
- 2Use GDC Standards as a practical checklist, not a poster on the wall
- 3Describe the elements of valid consent and the Montgomery test for material risk
- 4Apply Mental Capacity Act principles when an adult may not be able to decide, and know who can consent for a child
