Module 1 of 2 — why health data is special, who is accountable in the practice, and the everyday habits that stop a confidentiality incident.
Course aim
Give every team member a working way to handle patient information so records support care, confidentiality holds in a busy waiting room, and devices are not the weak point.
2 hours in two modules: this is 1 of 2. Complete them in numerical order: 1, then 2. Both stay open — there is no lock. This is the dedicated information governance series. Legal and Ethical 2 still covers confidentiality, records and candour in brief.
What you will be able to do
- 1Explain why dental records and images are special-category personal data
- 2Name the practice roles that matter (controller, processors, IG lead) without hiding behind a poster
- 3Apply confidentiality at the desk, in the surgery, and on screens that face the waiting room
- 4Describe everyday security: logins, email, messaging apps, and removable media
The two-module series
- This module — 1: Lawful records and day-to-day security
- 2: Access requests, breaches and retention
Suitable for: the whole team, including reception, clinicians, and the named IG lead.
Always follow current official guidance and the law that applies in your UK nation. This course is knowledge CPD, not legal, prescribing, or emergency-care advice.
