3. Accidents, first aid and RIDDOR

First aid

You need enough first-aid provision for the size and risks of the practice, and someone who knows where the kit is. Medical emergencies CPD covers clinical collapse; this is workplace first aid for cuts, burns and slips as well. Record what you used so the kit is restocked.

Accident book

Date, who, what, injury, witnesses, immediate action. Keep it confidential (not on the reception counter). Review themes: the same wet patch by the plant room is a system problem.

RIDDOR

Some workplace deaths, specified injuries, over-seven-day incapacities, and dangerous occurrences must be reported to the enforcing authority under RIDDOR. Sharps injuries with a risk of blood-borne virus, certain gas incidents, and failures of lifting equipment can fall in. Check the current HSE RIDDOR list on the day — do not guess from memory. Reporting is in addition to looking after the person and informing indemnity if a patient was involved.

Violence and lone working

Abusive incidents at the desk are health and safety as well as EDI and complaints. Panic alarm, two people at lock-up, and a written expectation that nobody is left alone with a threatening situation “to keep the diary moving”.
