A practical 2-hour update on how UK practices are expected to screen, name and treat periodontitis now — BPE as a screen, the 2017 classification as the diagnosis, and S3 Steps 1 to 4 as the treatment path.

Course aim

Stop treating “pockets” as a scale-and-polish problem. Give every clinician a working BSP-aligned pathway: screen, classify, change behaviour, instrument, review, support for life, and refer when complexity or non-response says so.

What you will be able to do

  1. 1Screen with the BPE and explain why it is not a diagnosis or a way to monitor periodontitis
  2. 2Apply the UK implementation of the 2017 classification: health, gingivitis, and periodontitis stage, grade, extent and current status
  3. 3Deliver S3 Step 1 (behaviour, risk-factor control, supragingival care) before rushing to instrumentation
  4. 4Plan S3 Step 2 subgingival instrumentation and a timed review of response
  5. 5Manage residual pockets (Step 3) and lifelong supportive periodontal care (Step 4)
  6. 6Refer using complexity, engagement and current BSP referral thinking, and know when antibiotics are not first-line

Use Start course below to begin at lesson 1. Later lessons unlock as you complete each step.

Suitable for: Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Therapists, Dental Nurses and Orthodontic Therapists.

Always open the current BSP S3 flowcharts, BPE guidance and referral documents when you treat. Guideline millimetre endpoints and commissioning rules can be updated. This course is knowledge CPD, not a substitute for those source documents or for practical instrumentation teaching.
