The desk rule

Do not discuss clinical or family details across a full waiting room. Do share a safeguarding concern with the designated lead — that is not gossip; it is the job.

When you may share without the person’s agreement

Seek agreement where it is safe. You may still need to share if a child is at risk, an adult cannot protect themselves, others are in danger, or a crime is involved. The lead will decide the next step. You should still tell the lead even if you are unsure about consent.

Phone calls and messages

• Confirm who you are speaking to before giving any information
• Do not leave safeguarding detail on an answerphone that others can play
• Use the practice system, not a personal phone gallery

Parents and carers

Be open where it is safe. Do not alert someone if that could put a child or adult in more danger — that is a decision for the lead and, if needed, the police or social care.
