3. Domestic abuse, coercive control and sharing

Coercive control

A pattern of isolation, fear and domination — not only bruises. In practice: a partner who cancels, who will not leave, who mocks, who controls payment. Offer a private moment if you can. Do not hand a leaflet while they watch if that increases risk. Know the local domestic-abuse route.

Financial abuse

A third party blocking care the patient wants and understands, or using the patient’s money without their agreement.

Level 2 response

Inform and support the person where it is safe; involve relevant partners; keep accurate records; apply local adult-safeguarding procedures. Module 3 covers LADO, referrals and the practice file.
