What changed
The 2017 World Workshop reclassified periodontal and peri-implant diseases. The British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (BSP) published a UK way to use that classification in everyday practice. Treatment then followed the European Federation of Periodontology S3 guideline for Stage I–III periodontitis, which BSP adapted for the UK (adolopment): same evidence, UK-shaped recommendations.
Gingivitis is not a small periodontitis
Gingivitis is reversible inflammation confined to the gingiva. Periodontitis is host-mediated, plaque-associated inflammation that destroys attachment and bone. Once someone is a periodontitis patient, they stay a periodontitis patient even if today’s gums look quiet — the stage does not go backwards.
Plaque is necessary, not the whole story
Susceptibility differs. Smoking and diabetes change grade and response. A “routine scale” in a person with good plaque control and no disease is not evidence-based prevention. A person with periodontitis needs a stepwise plan, not a timed polish.
What this course will not do
It will not photocopy BSP tables. Open current BSP flowcharts when you need exact pocket and bleeding endpoints, paediatric BPE detail, or the Stage IV / peri-implant papers (those came after the Stage I–III S3 pack).
