1. The work is the hazard, not a personality flaw

This course

1 hour of verifiable CPD. Standalone. GDC Development Outcomes A, B and D.

Suggested study time

  • Strain and safety — 18 min
  • How to help a colleague — 20 min
  • Crisis and fitness to practise — 17 min
  • Knowledge check — 5 min

Why this is CPD

Tired, frightened or isolated people miss allergies, snap at nurses, and drive home unsafe. Wellbeing is not a scented candle policy. It is part of how the team stays competent.

Common pressures

Running late, NHS targets where they apply, fear of GDC and complaints, isolation in a small practice, money, and the emotional load of anxious patients. None of that is an excuse for unkindness. All of it is context.

Fatigue

A 12-hour day with no proper break is a clinical risk. Say so. Slow irreversible steps. Leaders who treat exhaustion as loyalty are designing error (Human Factors).

You cannot pour from an empty mug

That sentence is overused because it is still true. Annual leave that cannot be taken, lunch at the computer, and “we do not do mental health here” are practice design, not toughness.

This course will not diagnose you

Low mood, anxiety, burnout-type exhaustion, and depression are not interchangeable labels for a quiz. If work is affecting sleep, hope, or safety, that is a reason to talk to a GP or occupational health — not to self-label from a CPD module.
