Level 2 module 3 of 3 (1 hour) — how to refer, how to record so the account can be used, what to do if the concern is about a colleague, and how the practice proves a system to CQC.
Course aim
Meet the knowledge expected at safeguarding Level 2 for dentists and dental care professionals, after they have completed Level 1 so the practice can show a working system, not only a policy folder.
Hours: Level 2 is 3 hours in 3 modules of 1 hour. This is 3 of 3. Complete them in numerical order. All modules stay open — there is no lock between them. Refresh at least every 3 years. Competency should be reviewed in-year by the practice. Who takes this: dentists and DCPs, after Level 1. Non-clinical staff do not take Level 2. Take this after Level 1. Completing modules 1, 2 and 3 meets the 3-hour Level 2 minimum. Clinical total with Level 1 is 5 hours.
What you will be able to do
- 1Use local children’s and adult referral routes, including 999 and out-of-hours
- 2Keep contemporaneous records that distinguish fact from opinion
- 3Describe the LADO (or equivalent) pathway for allegations against staff
- 4List what a practice safeguarding system must include for CQC-facing inspection

Always follow current national guidance and your local safeguarding children partnership / adult safeguarding board procedures. Level 3 is not normally required in general dental practice; safeguarding leads may choose it as extra.
